Content Debt: A $4.63 Trillion Business Liability

Research produced in collaboration with FT Longitude, part of the Financial Times. This report, produced by Storyblok in collaboration with FT Longitude, quantifies “content debt,” the hidden cost of outdated, inaccurate, and off-brand enterprise content. Based on a survey of 550 senior executives at billion-dollar-plus companies across the US, UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia, it finds that content debt costs organizations an estimated $4.63 trillion globally each year, more than Japan’s GDP.  Key themes include:  AI is raising the stakes: LLMs and AI-driven discovery are surfacing old, buried content that used to be safely hidden, creating brand and compliance risk  Visibility is the first fix: most executives lack full visibility into their published content, which limits their ability to audit and correct it  Composable, atomized content: reusable content blocks help serve both human audiences and AI systems  The Content Confidence Index (CCI): a new benchmark scoring content across six dimensions (visibility, brand alignment, usefulness, clarity, SEO, GEO)  Composable/headless architecture: positioned as the structural foundation for sustaining content confidence over time
