How Utilities Can Balance EV Charging Demand

The EV wave is coming, but are utilities prepared to ride it? Managed charging strategies, which balance EV charging with peak demand, can help. When someone plugs in an EV, managed charging software uses predictive analytics, vehicle telematics, and real-time data from thousands of charging stations to determine whether the grid is prepared to distribute electricity. If not, EV owners in a managed charging program are incentivized to charge during off-peak hours. For utilities, managed charging can be a low-cost, non-wire alternative (NWA) to alleviate grid congestion and avoid infrastructure upgrades.

A new infographic illustrates how managed charging software will help utilities ride the EV wave that shows:

– 53% of car sales will be electric in 2030
– Adoption levels will require 1.2 million public EV chargers, 28 million private EV chargers, and a 90 GW vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capacity
– By 2050, EV adoption could increase total U.S. electric demand by 38%
